Another great learning experience My sister called me because her furnace was making a weird noise even though it wasn't calling for heat. Low and behold I find one of the heater packs kicking on and off. It appears the sequencer contact may be stuck keeping power to it. Well the top coil pack is a 9. I noticed the bottom coik pack is a 4. I'm assuming that it wasn't wired because it is a 51, btu furnace and she lives a singlewide trailer. Would I be correct? I removed the wire from the bad sequencer and tried to hookup the bottom coil. Low and behold that sequencer wasn't closing to energize the heater. Well in the mean time I just left her with one 4. It seemed to be keeping it warm when I left.
Or the best line to hook it up to.

Every year we field 's of tech calls for electric furnace not working properly or my fan quit working and my heater blows only cool or luke warm air. It controls when to bring on the electric heat elements in sequence along with controlling the blower motor in the heating mode. An electric furnace sequencer is a device that turns one or more heating elements on and off. This is necessary to limit the electric current spike that occurs when an electrical device is energized. If all the elements in a unit were energized at the same time, the current surge would probably cause the breaker to trip or the fuse to blow. In order to tell whether a part is broken or not, we must know how it normally works. The heat relay consists of a heater coil, a bimetal switch, and connections for wires. The heater coil on modern units is powered by 24 volts from the furnace control board. On older units, some of the coils were powered by or volt power. When power is supplied to the heater coil, electric current flows and produces heat in the relay.

Each year we see a high number of electric furnace fails in the fall and I wanted to put together some helpful tips so you can better understand your electric furnace. The sequencer is the main brain in operating the electric heat elements in your furnace the sequencer is a series of switches that turn on the heating elements in a sequence one at a time in 30 sec intervals. As the sequencer gets old they don't perform well as they have small internal parts that wear out. The best way to inspect the function of the sequencer is with a voltage meter. If any signs of non operating sequencer replace it as small problems become bigger problems as time goes on. The very bottom wires are your low voltage 24VAC and the element wires are VAC the very top of the sequencer M1 - M2 are to control the fan blower unit. When inspecting your furnace look for any burnt wires and replace them!! All electrical connections must be tight so they do not cause conductive heating from loose contacts.
