Characters from varying racial backgrounds are uncommon in anime, but a few franchises are becoming more inclusive. There have been some black anime characters that appeared in some old-school shows, but some are controversial because of their portrayal and looks. Luckily for fans, the shows of today are on the road to including more black characters and representing them respectfully. Many have appeared as key supporting characters, but some shows have them as leading characters. Either way, these characters are memorable and are some of the best characters in the anime world.

In a medium that is dominated by light skin characters, we felt it appropriate to rank the best Black anime characters of all time. If this list proves anything, it's that we need more Black anime characters! Don't get me wrong, there are some really awesome anime characters that are Black; we just simply don't see them enough, and especially not in lead roles. The English dub gained popularity due to Samuel L Jackson voicing the lead character. Afro-Samurai went on to win an Emmy and spawned a film sequel. The basic premise revolves around the warrior known as Afro. He grows up in a dystopian feudal-style Japan where he seeks revenge on an outlaw who killed his father for having the "Number 1" headband, a symbol of the greatest warrior of the world.

With anime becoming increasingly popular around the world, so has the demand for more diverse characters, and that has led to some of the most iconic Black characters in anime. Black characters have become more popular both in Japan and outside, especially in the past few decades as anime fandom grows. Some mangaka, like Eichiro Oda, were way ahead of their time by incorporating Black characters in their work which paved the way for future creators to follow suit. More than just a handful of small examples in lesser-known works, Black characters can be found in even the biggest anime franchises. Trailblazers like Tite Kubo and Masashi Kishimoto designed some memorable Black characters in their respective series.
