Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. I hiked this one a couple of weeks ago Feb 23rd. Very busy trail and the parking lot fills up pretty quick, however, you can park on the road near the parking lot on one side but it is in direct sunlight compared to the shady parking lot at the trail head. The majority of the trail to Elk Mountain is in the woods and out of the sun and the trail is all incline and actually kind of steep in some spots. This is where the snow and ice on the trail started… micro spikes are mandatory at this point as it was very slippery.

While up there, discovered a posse of cars camped out facing north in hopes of seeing the Northern Lights, due to reports of a solar storm that might reach our skies. Length: Today was not the best of weathers but still a dozen or so groups on the trail, including quite a few with dogs. When you get to the meadow you can see the four wheeler trail continue. A non stop butt burn the entire way up. Poles are very recommended. Would not want to be on that ridge during high winds or rain. If you like stairs, you will love Elk Mountain. Poles helped me feel balanced. Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. But please do come prepared: spikes, poles, winter gear are a must if you want to head towards Thurston. Road 21 is closed about 7 miles before trailhead as of November 17 due to the fire operations.
