The team was located in Elliot Lake , Ontario, Canada. Peter Svela was the original catalyst for starting the Elliot Lake Vikings. The team was fairly competitive until under the coaching of Barry Johnston, at a time when from to the dominant teams in the league were the Chapleau Huskies, the Blind River Beavers, and the Soo Michigan Indians. From to , the team was poorly managed, was not competitive, and was on the verge of bankruptcy. The original charter for the team was set up as a non-profit organization and relied on various fundraising activities to meet its financial requirements. Prior to the season, a new executive was elected, holding over several of the previous board of directors members, and John Berthelot Sr. Through the generosity and assistance of two of the major creditors of the club, and with the work of the executive, the team started rebuilding the club's finances.

The team is owned by a community nonprofit corporation. The team chose the Wildcats, over the previous Elliot Lake Vikings moniker that had been for several decades by a previous franchise. Nathan Hewitt, a former junior coach in the Central Canada Hockey League was chosen as the team's first coach. During their inaugural —15 season, the Wildcats finished second in their division with a regular season record. However, their season was cut short in the semifinals losing 4-games-to-1 to the Soo Thunderbirds. For their second season in —16, the Wildcats once again finished second in their division, behind only the Soo Thunderbirds. The Wildcats were led offensively by Cole Hepler, who finished seventh in league scoring with 79 points and captain Spencer MacLean, who finished 10th respectively. Hepler also had a league high game point streak during the season. Rookie goaltender Aaron Mackay starred for the team in net, finishing third in the league with 21 wins. The Wildcats eliminated the Rayside-Balfour Canadians in five games in the first round, before falling once again to the Thunderbirds in the Division Finals 4-games-to
