Yes I've checked firing order a gazillion times Thanks!

Hi to all my name is Hessler, first I wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone for all the great support, inspiration, knowledge and I could go on, but I recently bought the car of my dreams, a ford slantback, but like any rod its got issues and Im trying to iron them out, one is the timing, when I first got the car I noticed the timing was bad and I figured easy fix, well yesterday I tried fixing it but soon realized that no change would fix the timing issue, then I got to think ok Scratching my head, I had never seen this on a chevy engine, I know the engine has minor work, maybe a cam, the previous owner did not know much about the engine. Any thoughts? The car runs, starts, but sometimes the engine will not shut off immediately. Sent from my iPhone using The H. Hessler , May 7, Joined: Oct 29, Posts: Profile Page.

Did you know that the ignition sequence of a Chevy engine, including the camshaft, crankshaft, spark plugs, and spark plug wires , can make or break its performance? The firing sequence of the Chevy , determined by the arrangement of spark plug wires and distributor cap changes , directly affects the operation of the crankshaft, pistons, and cylinders. Considering the importance of harmonics and balance in engine performance , understanding the firing order of cylinders, pistons, spark plugs , and crankshafts is key for any enthusiast or mechanic. This includes the crankshaft, pistons, spark plugs, and spark plug wires. The engine firing order refers to the sequence in which each cylinder receives a spark from the distributor, igniting the fuel mixture in the cylinders and driving the crankshaft through the connected pistons. Midland Metal Casting Operations in Saginaw, Michigan, manufactured the motor blocks and cylinder heads. It is an electrical braking system in which the tire braking cylinders of a car are activated using an electron mechanism. The lower size of small-cylinder engines makes them superior for quickness and control, although newer variants can match the power of large block engines in terms of output. The diagram above shows how Chevy has already a selected sequence of engines getting sparks. Piston 1 fires first, succeeded by 8, etc till all of the pistons have been ignited in this sequence. To keep it easier for technicians and automobile drivers to recognize the pistons after they leave the manufacturer, pistons are generally arranged in a certain fashion. In other words, piston 1 is located in the rear left corner of the engine block. Afterward, the numerals go from left to right, with the evenly-numbered pistons just on the left of the motor and even pistons on the correct side.

Has anyone baseline dyno'd an engine with the original early GM firing order and then swapped cams to one having the same valve timing and no other changes except for revised firing order to test this theory? Paul Sakalas says:.

The Gm firing order is a V8 motor. It should be finished in proper order so different cylinders warm-up and match up with one another in a specific way.

Cary Fowler says:. Does your distributor look like this? Align the timing BTDC. The physical plug wire locations and firing orders for early Chevy and early Ford V8 engines are the same. Top Contributors this Month View All. For "fun" I switched the wires to what is shown LB9 and L98 tech, porting, tuning, and bolt-on aftermarket products. When you feel compression, align marks, check rotor pointing to 1. Then the remainder of the wires, CCW, correct order per cast-in markings on the intake Cylinder 's, viewed from above: 2 4 6 8 Fan Trans 1 3 5 7 Then it will run.
