Fisher Stevens really regrets appearing as an Indian character in brownface for the movie " Short Circuit " and its subsequent sequel. Stevens, who was born in Chicago, plays Ben Jabituya in the science fiction comedy about two scientists whose advanced robot gains sentience. Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment , Stevens explained that he agrees with that criticism and feels guilt over the role in hindsight.

Director and actor Fisher Stevens continues to express his regrets over using "brownface" to play the Indian character, Ben Jabituya, in the hit comedy, Short Circuit , as well as its sequel, Short Circuit 2 , where Stevens' character now re-named Ben Jahveri became the lead human actor paired with the robot star of the film, Johnny 5. Movies that his decision to do the film "definitely haunts me. Short Circuit was about a robot that was being developed as part of a project where robots would deliver nuclear weapons, dubbed the S. Lighting strikes one of the robots Number 5 and it short circuits its programming and it becomes sentient. It escapes and befriends a young woman Ally Sheedy who helps teach it about being alive. At the end of the film, the robot now dubbed Johnny 5 goes into hiding with the young woman and the lead robot designer.
When John Badham, director of the robot comedy Short Circuit , decided to change the character of Ben from a white grad student to an Indian, he could have provided a prominent role for an actual Indian actor. Instead, he hired a white guy. When the comedian learned that the actor playing Ben was white, he felt disillusioned and insulted. After talking to Stevens, who has stayed busy with film and television work, Ansari no longer considers him to be such a villain, just an actor who needed work and was coming up during a culturally insensitive time. To his credit, Fisher Stevens took the assignment seriously and did some considerable research in order to make sure that Ben was not just a stereotype. However, Ansari and Stevens both acknowledge today that the part should have gone to an Indian actor.
