Furthermore, it allows those who use it to interact directly with the Underworld and its inhabitants. Unfortunately, that's about where most fans get lost. The official explanations for the STL are long and confusing. Kirito spent many pages of the light novel describing how the machine worked and what it did. Anyone who was only partially paying attention would find themselves lost once the story got underway and terms like "Fluctlight" and "Light Cube Cluster" were thrown around left and right. It's important to understand how and why the STL was conceived. The machine is based on the technology Akihiko Kayaba used to scan and download his consciousness to the internet. The STL can scan a human soul and use it as the basis for creating artificial intelligence on par with humans. As for how the human consciousness is observed and quantified, that's done through what's known as a Fluctlight. This collection of quantum light particles present in the nerve cells are what makes up the human consciousness, or soul, at least in Sword Art Online. It can even reverse this process and convert computer data into something readable by the Divers. This Fluctlight translation is what forms the virtual reality of the STL. By using the information stored in Fluctlights rather than computer data, the STL can insert "Mnemonic Visual Data," or memories, directly into the Divers. This makes the Divers feel as if they're experiencing everything happening to them rather than simply having it simulated.

Rather than limit itself to one world, Sword Art Online has made use of a variety of game worlds that its protagonists adventure through. But the series lost the survival game elements that had made its premise so interesting with the conclusion of its inaugural Aincrad Arc. The Alicization arc thrust a comatose Kirito into yet another virtual world, putting him in a state similar to how he was throughout the SAO incident. Making Kirito so vulnerable went a long way in getting fans invested in the arc, as did the introduction of the Soul Translator, which brought back the life-or-death high-stakes that the second and third arcs had been lacking. The inhabitants that formed its first society were all made from the souls of those involved in the project, making for an interesting distinction between them and other AI. This human-like connection is what drives Kirito to help the residents of Underworld, and the humanity of those who inhabit it is reflected in their personalities, ambitions, and the impact of their deaths. Getting attached to characters like Eugeo, Alice, and Bercouli, among others, is what made the conflicts that comprised the Alicization arc so engaging.

With the era of the Cold War and, later, the collapse of the Soviet Union, people have been becoming less and less tolerant of the death of soldiers, while countries with large militaries, especially America, have been unable to give up their army munitions industry. With such conditions, the need for unmanned weapons to fight in wars instead of humans has arisen. However, as no countries export weapons to Japan, Japan's defense technology has become too weak and, eventually, Japan had to buy new equipment from America. Although, formally, America is supposed to work together with Japan on developing new technology, but in reality, Japan has only been given outdated equipment. Thus, the need for Japan to develop its own technology came. By using a 4th generation FullDive machine, called the Soul Translator STL , Rath succeeded in copying the Fluctlights souls of twelve newborn babies, creating a «Soul Archetype», a non-developed Artificial Fluctlight that could be copied to create new Artificial Fluctlights, which would then need to be nurtured to mature into an individual. Underworld is set in a past era, when science and philosophy were just being discovered, but instead of recreating a past era, limited terrain and certain customs were introduced so that the inhabitants of the world would form their own society.
