Hundreds of Whitefish Bay residents have signed a petition asking officials to reconsider their current proposal for renovating and reopening the abandoned Fox Bay theater. Officials are considering awarding developer New Land Enterprises with one of their largest grants to renovate the Fox Bay Theater Building in a three-step phased plan. The proposal includes plans to renovate office spaces on the third floor, rent out retail space on the street level and find a new operator for the abandoned movie theater. If awarded, those funds wouldn't be used to renovate the theater. However, if a grant is made to the first two phases, it doesn't stop Whitefish Bay from helping the theater in a future grant request. Village President Kevin Buckley said he supports the petition because it shows "enormous enthusiasm" for the Fox Bay Theater. It is vital to get the theater operating to have a vibrant Silver Spring business district," he wrote to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. One concept is for the Village to do something big and bold and buy-out New Land and develop the business jewel in WFB; another is for citizens to form an NFP to operate the theater.
