Ella is 13 years old and was living her everyday life when she got the devastating news that she has been diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Ella is in her first year of high school and had her whole life ahead of her and whilst this still may be true she now has the biggest battle to fight. Ella will now need to miss initially the next 2 years of schooling trying to fight this illness. Ella is the daughter of one of the kindest hearted women we know Rima Hafda.

Update: 19th November Since the launch, Ella was able to disclose just how dangerous a mental state she had been in in response to her body being so painful to inhabit, and not having a way to escape or address the pain. We are so glad the fundraiser was timely, and provided a light Ella could follow back to herself, and to keep fighting. It has been touching to see our community come together with people donating, sharing the fundraiser with heart-felt messages, and checking in on Ella. There is something medicinal about banding together in acts of care and love. In a world that at time feels impervious to small acts of friendship, love, and kindness, it has been heartwarming to be part of this fundraiser in being reminded, each donation, share, and kind message, that the goodness of people runs deep. Hopefully we are able to continue to reach out with this fundraiser, and get as close as we can to the cost of surgery. As you likely know, Ella is and has been for some time in a horrific place medically, and we cannot have her go through it alone. Living with an ASD brain in a neurotypical world is challenging enough.

For a multitude of reasons, the past two months have been extremely challenging, and for a long time we have been unsure of what the future looks like for Ella, and unsure what to tell you as a result. What we can now say, is that Ella has been discharged from the hospital, and finally in her home setting we are able to see how far she has come. She is walking without aids, living independently, and even talking about going back to work!

Donation protected. Ella is a 20 year old final year college student in University of Galway. She lives in Ballinderreen, Co. Galway with us, her two younger sisters, Sophie, Hannah and of course our two golden retrievers, Murphy and Enzo! After complaining of headaches since Christmas and visits to the GP and Emergency Room she was given a CT scan on the 29th January, at this stage she was reporting nausea and imbalance when walking, within an hour she was told that the CT scan had revealed a large tumour on the base of her brain. Her world fell apart and our hearts were completely shattered. She was admitted to the excellent care of the staff in AMU in GUH and was immediately listed for surgery and a few days later was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. The team of Neurosurgeons removed the tumour in a grueling 5 hour operation.

The symptoms she experiences daily: nausea, agonizing pain, loss of appetite, inability to have bowel movements, are symptoms that impact the very most basic things we need to live — food, sleep, freedom from overwhelming pain. Ella has White-Sutton syndrome, which is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder, this along with Epilepsy, means it takes two people to lift her safely; Ella also requires bigger and better wheel chairs, sensory equipment, and mobility Aids. The funds we desperately need are to adapt their house for Ella to be lifted safely, we would like to buy the equipment, mobility aids needed to make her life easier both for her parents and 8 year old sister, and give Ella the best quality of life we think she deserves.
