The Graf von Faber-Castell Pen of the Year series is an annual limited edition that experiments with materials and techniques for decorating the barrel and is the pinnacle of the Graf von Faber-Castell collection. Each design is produced for one year only and each pen is unique - a hand-made work of art. Since when the series was conceived, materials have included snakewood, amber, stingray leather, mammoth ivory with ebony, petrified wood, satinwood and horsehair. The pens are individually numbered and luxuriously presented, along with guarantees and information brochures. The pen itself is a magnum-sized fountain pen with a plunger filling mechanism. The carat bi-colour gold nib is run in by hand at the Graf workshops.

Through the use of elaborate characters, they were able to record their history and leave clues to their culture years later, a true statement to the importance of written history.
