As I have mentioned before a mylar space blanket at about 50 grams is good enough for this and does double duty by keeping you warm in an emergency — also good for your day pack when you go for a stroll away from your camp to check out that waterfall, rare orchid or monstrous stag, etc. Another leading contender is a Polycro ground sheet. You get a heap of sticky tape too which might come in handy for repairs of some sort. I like the see-through9Ness of it actually. Still: Perhaps one of the best features of a Polycryo groundsheet is that in an emergency it can be used as a still. There is always water to be extracted from soil or vegetation. Simply dig a hole, place your billy in the centre, cover the hole with your groundsheet after filling it with succulent vegetation , and place a pebble in the centre to direct the condensation into your billy.

Ground sheets. The tape patching the holes is starting to weigh more than the sheet! What are you all using and where did you get it from? Re: Ground sheets. I use plastic black damp proof lining for concrete floors used on construction sites from Bunnings or construction suppliers. It comes in more than one thickness thin or thick. I've been using the offcuts from our floating floor install if and when I use one. If you find it in Aus. I couldn't post it up. Tortoise wrote: Al M wrote: I use plastic black damp proof lining for concrete floors used on construction sites from Bunnings or construction suppliers. I cut a footprint for my first heavy bushwalk tent from black builders plastic. Think it weighed close to a kilo so never used it!
Not so great for long distance unless you have the time and money to keep swapping them out.

Tip: polythene is folded at the factory and then rolled. In most cases, if you buy rolls that unfold to two metres rather than four metres the installation process will be easier. If you buy four metre wide rolls it may be easier to cut the polythene strips in half to make it more manageable under the house.

I'm always happy to lighten things up in my pack. This durable and strong sheet does just that!
I've used 1oz cuben I had left over from another project. I use a cheapo space blanket when going light. And where would I source a couple of metres of a similar material to try this out? But the size and weight advantage offered up by the emergency blanket is hard to overlook. We've used these and more, but i've no strong preference. Not the easiest stuff to find if you just want a couple of square meters. This will be more waterproof than any building wrap. SeaStar Solutions. Medium: 6x8 size 1. I'll see how I get on.
