As they attempt to survive on the war-torn Halo, they face several obstacles, including the ancient being known as the Primordial , the Flood , and Mendicant Bias. Like the rest of The Forerunner Saga , the novel's story has resonant connections to Halo 4 , among them the introduction of the Composer. The book begins with an ONI science team interrogating a damaged Forerunner monitor , believed to be a duplicate of a previously encountered device, questioning it about the Didact and the ancient relations between Forerunners and humans.

At first, the monitor describes his childhood and youth as Chakas, and how he met his companion Riser. His singleminded quest is demonstrative in allowing the Lord of Admirals to develop and provide the reader with wonderfully worked in tidbits of history and mechanics; it even goes so far as to dabble in sociology and anthropology. It was so mired in Forerunner jargon and rarified worldbuilding that it lacked the sort of lived-in soul that is present in almost every other piece of Halo fiction, game, comic, or otherwise. Loved it! Many humans brought to Halo. Halo overseers Industries wanted to produce novels that fleshed out the backstory of the ancient Forerunners.
