It was developed and published by Marvelous Interactive , and is part of the long-running Story of Seasons series of video games. It was later re-released on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 with improvements upon lag issues stemming from the PlayStation 2 port. The player starts the game with one cow, and can later acquire additional, higher-quality cattle as well as sheep, chickens, and a horse. The cow will stop producing milk after 40 days, and will have to be impregnated for her to continue making milk. In addition to these traditional Harvest Moon animals, this is the first game in the series to feature ducks and a goat.

Starting from the second chapter, Pony gives birth to a son, who will grow older and she needs to take care of him for the rest of the story. Residents also grow older or move as time passes. Pony can propose to her chosen bachelor by giving him a blue feather, but he will only accept it after she has convinced him to fall in love with her. If Pony is not engaged by the end of the first in-game year, either Gustafa, Marlin, or Rock will propose depending on who has developed the most affection. If Pony does not want to marry, the game will automatically end at the end of Year 1. Marrying at the end of the first year will let the game continue to follow her married life.

Additional events can be triggered such as engaging in a conversation with Lumina while she's practicing piano or observing Daryl conduct an experiment that will suddenly backfire.
