The song was written by Outfield guitarist John Spinks. Spinks was living in east London and invited the vocalist of the band, Tony Lewis, to his flat for a writing session. The two developed "Your Love" on the porch of the flat. Lewis sat on an amplifier and Spinks began writing the opening lyrics. According to Lewis, the song took only twenty minutes to write. Afterwards, the band began recording demos for their debut album Play Deep with producer William Wittman, who had also worked with Cyndi Lauper and the Fixx.

Lyrics submitted by numb. C'mon guys. The entire lyrics of this song scream a "quickie". Josie is obviously younger so he is making the unnamed girl feel better about herself by saying he's always liked his girls older. He want to "talk"- meaning he will probably say stuff to her to make her think he wants to be with her or whatever it takes to convince her. And as she is leaving, he is being a total dick to her saying, "Yeah, you're good but I don't want to be with you. I bet I am just another shoulder for you to cry on. That's what I get from this song. I can't see how this is anything about loving the older woman The entire song screams he just wanted to get in her pants.

But what is most fascinating is how the song struck a nerve given its subject matter—a young man invites over a girl he likes while his own girlfriend is not in town. And the tale within the song does not cross the line. The other woman decides to leave, with the potential cheater wishing she would stay. Crisis averted.
