How did you get into comedy? I was always into watching funny shows — what was on TV that I could sneakily watch after my mom went to bed. I would write and film my own sketches and I joined a sketch troupe in college. From there I got the crazy idea that I could just speak, sans ensemble, alone on a stage. So I started doing standup. The rest is a blurry history. I was probably around When we got there it was a room full of 50 to year-old men, having a party where they had also hired strippers who were dancing and sitting on laps while we told jokes. Where do you find your material? I get a lot of material from being honest about my own feelings — my fears and embarrassment. She hops out at the Comedy Store on Sunset, whisking through the kitchen and mentioning that the place was once a mob hangout. She plunks Blanche in a seat and darts to the stage, where she edges into a bit about how coy women can be at attracting men, those poor, unaware, testosterone-cursed creatures. They bought tickets. My career is a love letter to women. The joke treads on gender roles and stereotypes but avoids sermonizing. Shlesinger, who bristles with confidence and does not abide posers, can be merciless when she spots an overzealous, agenda-driven comic. Some female comics accused her of doing just that in June when she complained in a Deadline interview about what she saw as limited breadth and creativity from women stand-ups.

I remember we got off the plane, and at the time Twitter was something that hadn't turned into a total island of misfit toys, like, an evil broken-doll factory. So I just translated that to paper. I met him when I was I remember—and this is in the movie for a very specific reason—I was honest about the fact that I would go on dates and that I had a type of guy that I liked. I literally invite everyone to The Comedy Store. Refresh and try again. And I remember he sent me an email, chastising me for posting such a picture. Since the day I met you. I went home and I passed out for like 15 hours because how do you process that? Only in our society do we tell women to give a guy you're not chemically attracted to a chance.

Did he recognize you, the way the character in the movie recognizes her from her stand-up act? And he didn't know who else to call. Just because they both had a weak chin. I don't get hot under the collar. How did that factor into your thinking about whether to warn his new girlfriend? After the truth emerged and the relationship imploded, the stand-up star was reeling, questioning not only her own judgment but the truthfulness of everyone around her. Just maxing out credit cards?
