By Guy Walters. At first glance, they appear to be the sort of pictures that grace any family album — but look a little closer. Two of the faces are very familiar — and they usually bear scowls rather than smiles. They belong to none other than two of Britain's most feared gangsters: Ronnie and Reggie Kray. Since their heyday in the Fifties and Sixties, 'the twins', as they were known, have become synonymous with a sleazy sort of spurious glamour. They have become almost iconic figures who transcended the worlds of entertainment, politics and vicious criminality in which they moved.

The first image of actor Tom Hardy as the infamous Krays has been released as filming gets under way on a new movie about the notorious London gangsters. The year-old is taking on both roles as twins Ronnie and Reggie in Legend, which follows the rise and fall of the brothers in the s and s. In April, when Hardy was confirmed in the roles, he said: "I've got to work out how to play both twins, which will be fun. I'm not going to put too much pressure on myself, I just want to have some fun and see what's out there and explore with the work. Ronnie and Reggie Kray were infamous for their involvement running organised crime rackets in London's East End and were both jailed for life in for the murders of fellow gangsters George Cornell and Jack 'The Hat' McVitie. Ronnie died of a heart attack in prison in , while Reggie died of cancer in , eight weeks after he was granted release on compassionate grounds because of his illness.
