Collateral is a American neo-noir action thriller film [3] [4] directed and produced by Michael Mann from a script by Stuart Beattie and starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. When offered a high fare for driving to several locations, Max agrees but soon finds himself taken hostage by Vincent who turns out to be a hitman on a contract killing spree. Screenwriter Beattie first conceived the idea for the film when taking a taxicab home from Sydney airport. Beattie shared the idea with producer Julie Richardson, who showed it to director Frank Darabont. The film was pitched to HBO but was declined. It was purchased by DreamWorks but would not see development for three years. The film received critical acclaim in particular for the performances of Cruise and Foxx, Mann's direction and the editing. Collateral was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of Max Durocher is a Los Angeles cab driver trying to earn enough to start his own limousine business. In just four episodes, screenwriter Sir David Hare has created a fiendishly complex thriller that pulls us in all directions. The story is ambitious, taking in MI5, two murders and an international people-smuggling organisation run by an ex-military man right under the British authorities' noses. We've seen undercover agents. We've seen troubled snipers. We've seen sexual violence, and immigration detention centres, and a political battle within the shadow cabinet. It's a LOT to take in. But in the final episode, all these threads start to pull together and the convoluted story becomes clearer.

Such is the case with Collateral , a four-hour BBC-produced limited mystery series that dropped on Netflix last week with little lead-time, despite major talent both in front of and behind the camera. Not only was this a pleasant surprise, but the series as a whole is a rich, compelling, and refreshingly joyous murder mystery that delivers on the promise of a good yarn and throws in tactfully navigated topical subject matter as an added bonus. Something of a mix between Homeland and Broadchurch , with a tiny dash of Fargo thrown in for good measure, Collateral is essential viewing.

Vincent is one of the screen's best villains; he's cool and menacing, but also very complex. You like it? The film is actually at its most effective in the smaller, more original moments, like the opening body-on-the-cab shocker, the police intervention and the bag steal.
