In this, the final episode of the first season of Lewis, a woman is found hanged in her home. At first it looks like suicide, but then it turns out that her husband killed her. Because he found out that when she was a child, she was babysitting her infant brother, and when he scratched himself with his fingernails as infants are wont to do, she decided to solve the problem by taking a pair of shears and cutting off his hands. Then she grew up and was released onto the world with a new identity and got married and had a couple of kids, but her husband found out what she had done. And then he killed another woman who I think was a social worker who had worked with her. I will accept no excuses for this fictional behavior. And I will accept no excuses for the fact that someone imagined this as a work of fiction and then wrote it and got it made into a major television show.

Hathaway: Has Oxford changed much since you've been away? Lewis: No. It changed before I went. Lewis is a spinoff series of Inspector Morse and the second instalment of the Morseverse. The series centers around Robert "Robbie" Lewis Kevin Whately , who, in a five year gap after the events of Inspector Morse , has lost his wife in a hit and run accident. Perhaps not coincidentally, this Lewis is a lot more argumentative than he used to be. Thanks to his promotion from Sergeant to Inspector, he once more finds himself pottering around Oxford, solving murders and the occasional government plot. Lewis is joined by the young Sergeant James Hathaway played by Laurence Fox a former priest-in-training, who gave up his education and joined the police instead. He's tight-lipped and focused, much like Morse in his prime, but has a weak spot wherever the fairer sex is concerned. The other regular cast members are Lewis's superintendent, Jean Innocent played by Rebecca Front , and pathologist Laura Hobson played by Clare Holman , the only other returning character from Inspector Morse. The show originally ended after seven series because both lead actors wanted to move on. The final episodes showed Lewis deciding to retire and Hathaway leaving the force after becoming disillusioned with police work.
Lewis eventually moved on in his career and took a promotion, before moving to the Virgin Islands after the death of his wife.
In the television adaptation, Inspector Morse , he is played by Kevin Whately. Following the conclusion of the series, Whately reprised the role as the lead character in Lewis , in which the character has been promoted to the rank of inspector. Many years later, Lewis gained a spin-off series of his own following the death of the leading character. The character is played by Kevin Whately. In Inspector Morse, Lewis is sidekick to the main character, Detective Chief Inspector Endeavour Morse and together they work for the Thames Valley Police in Oxford, England where he is shown to be an honest, hardworking, and earnest policeman and is still only a Detective Sergeant.

The "sidekick" to Morse, Lewis is a detective sergeant in the Thames Valley Police , and appears in all 13 Morse novels. In the television adaptation, Inspector Morse , he is played by Kevin Whately. Following the conclusion of the series, Whately reprised the role as the lead character in Lewis , in which the character has been promoted to the rank of inspector. His background and personality — a working class, easygoing family man — is frequently contrasted with that of Morse — Oxford educated, RP-accented , and a life-long bachelor. Morse frequently uses these differences to insult or demean Lewis, perhaps from Morse's point of view in a playful manner, but Lewis is often not amused by the jabs. In his frustration, Lewis is often more in step with their joint superior Chief Superintendent Strange , himself an evident supporter of Lewis; however, despite a great respect towards Strange, Lewis is always unflinchingly loyal to Morse and follows his lead. Morse's dying words, said to Strange, are, "Thank Lewis for me. In Inspector Morse , Lewis is often shown following a hunch that Morse criticises, and in the end Lewis is usually proved correct, or at least more correct than Morse. Near the end of the television series, Lewis moves on in his career and takes a promotion. With the end of Inspector Morse and the death of its star, John Thaw , Lewis's adventures had seemed to come to an end.
