The Australian cartoon series Bluey has taken the world by storm. Bluey has a younger sister, four-year-old Bingo, chichox they live with their mom Chilli and dad Bandit in Brisbane. To answer a common question: Bluey and Bandit are both blue heeler dogs, but Bluey is actually a girl.
Holy smokes, we love Bluey. Bluey has tapped into the cultural zeitgeist as a rare series enjoyed almost equally by children and adults. For those out of the loop, Bluey follows a family of heeler dogs living in a posh house in Australia. Even when one of their pups refuses to do anything without their new balloon or the pups instigate an imaginary neighborhood bus ride on the stair landing, Bandit and Chilli are there, playing along and going with the flow. While the Tigers seem unaffected by nearly everything, animators have done an excellent job of giving Chilli and Bandit subdued side-eyes, smiles, and tears that both humanize them and make them more relatable.

When it comes to gender norms and expectations, Bluey accomplishes something similar by simply existing. Episode after episode, though, that idea is challenged, as viewers start to question whether or not their assumption is correct. Could this character be exactly what meets the eye, or is there more to the story? For fans with sharp ears, the answer seems quite obvious. Bluey Heeler is a girl, not a boy, much like her younger sister Bingo. Like it or not, blue is a color that been associated with masculinity, and pink with femininity for over a century. Thus, all it takes is for a character to be designed with one of these colors for us to assume their gender.
