J-45 pickguard
By jjrpilot March 13, in Gibson Acoustic, j-45 pickguard. I love this guitar but I'm not a fan of the how thick "flubber" the pickguard is. Do you all have any j-45 pickguard for a tortoise shell like, THIN pickguard that I could replace it with? That shouldn't be a difficult guard to get.
Swapped out my first pickguard Gibson J At the time, I wasn't crazy about the pickguard, but it was such a great sounding guitar and had the other features I wanted early 50s style headstock and chunky neck that I figured I'd get around to changing out the pickguard one day. That day was yesterday -- worked like a charm. Cleaned up the residual glue residue with Ronsonol, polished the surface up with Virtuoso, and installed the new J pickguard made by James Burkett of firestripepickguards. Turned out wonderfully, as can be seen below. If there is one complaint, it is that the geniuses at Gibson didn't allow the nitro finish to dry appropriately before installing the original pickguard, so now I'm left with some impressions in the finish where the previous pickguard was.

By Wilco January 8, in Gibson Acoustic. I have a J that I purchased brand new, and would like to change the pickguard. There are a few reasons for this: 1. It's not installed in the proper position, in my opinion. It covers the entire side of the rosette. I feel that it's a bit too small for my liking anyway, and would like to replace it with the 50s style "batwing" guard. The batwing looks cool as hell. First off, would this void the warranty if I did it myself? Secondly, I've read and seen a number of ways to remove a pickguard — some people apply heat and pry it off with a thin palette blade. I've also read about soaking uncoated dental floss in naphtha lighter fluid , and working it underneath the pickguard.
