Jeanne , also known as the Hellfire Witch , is the tritagonist of the dark fantasy manga series The Case Study of Vanitas and its anime television series adaptation of the same name. Jeanne was a bourreau, a vampire burdened with hunting and executing members of her own kind as recompense for the sins of her ancestors. She slaughtered over a thousand vampires in the war between humanity and her kin, and was placed into an century-long induced coma by her master August Ruthven. The Case Study of Vanitas is set in a fictional 19th-century Paris and contains vampire and steampunk thematics. Mochizuki was heavily inspired to write Vanitas following her first visit to France as well as by vampire films. She aimed to surpass her previous work, Pandora Hearts , by drawing more appealing fight scenes and focusing more on the themes involving hidden identities. The character was named Vanitas of the Blue Moon , making him part of the Blue Moon clan with some vampire abilities. Mochizuki conceived Vanitas as a vampire character during a trip to France, but she changed her mind and made him human after talking with her editor.
