I showed my daughter how to do this, even though my oil change message is not currently showing, since oil change is not yet due. However, it got me wondering if doing this action when the oil change message is not on, will cause the oil monitoring system to reset to zero, as if the oil was just changed.

I still change mine every miles. Although I'm beginning to wonder if that is necessary. If you are not going to keep the car 30 years and drive it , miles, changing the oil more often is just peace of mind, not necessity. The book says 8K but I think that is the maximum.

Remove oil drain plug and allow oil to empty into a tub this is where most have some spillage. Allow the oil pan to drain for a while unless you are in a rush. Carefully remove oil filter, keeping it vertical to avoid oil spilling out of the full oil filter, empty and dispose of appropriately.
