For much of the narrative she seems in danger of re-enacting her sister's fate. Some might say you can't be truly free without completely letting go, without risking life and limb and even other lives, but I admired Phoebe for still keeping her wits without forsaking her calling. This is a wonderfully readable book about the dynamics of a damaged family; a vivid prefiguration of the considerable achievement of 'A Visit from the Goon Squad'. Her journey through Europe pulled at my memories of my own travels there, but sadly I just couldn't picture it as vividly as I should have. I was a child during the "hippy era" but do remember hearing on the news about the radical groups.
