I have so many problems with Twitter! Or at least the corner of Twitter that is most visible to me. Twitter also makes me view my fellow humans in a much darker light than I would otherwise, because the algorithm assures that the worst takes — and the worst users — are pumped directly into my brain every time I log on. My only real concern about leaving Twitter is that it will affect business, since my account allows me to tweet anything I write or podcast to almost , people. If anyone asks where I went, I hope this suffices as an explanation. You have all given me the greatest gift of all: freedom from toxic social media. I look forward to using more of my brain to write and podcast and think. Okay, this is a slight exaggeration. The greatest gift of all would be for the Patriots to settle their franchise-quarterback issue. Good luck taking a break from the coke-loving stripper girlfriend with borderline personality disorder that is Twitter! Share this post.

The world of young-adult-fiction Twitter, or YA Twitter, is a very intense place, prone to constant callouts and opinion-policing, particularly on matters of identity and social justice. I got a bunch of responses, many of them eye-popping in one way or another. Those writers who reached out from secure positions within YA or other genres were adamant that they not be named, that they sensed a real threat to their careers in the possibility of getting sucked into one of these outrage-vortexes — even by simply criticizing YA Twitter publicly. Some writers of color, meanwhile, are finding that their own ethnic identities, as interpreted by agents and publishers who have adopted increasingly rigid and conservative ideas about who should be writing what, are crimping their ability to do the sort of work that most excites them. Please get in touch with me if you have something to say about any of this: jesse. In , when Lit Twitter was a kinder, gentler place, I landed an amazing agent who to this day I have absolutely nothing bad to say about. She got me in front of major houses with lightning speed and my debut novel made it to acquisitions Scholastic before ultimately being passed for reasons that bummed me out, but were perfectly understandable. While working on a followup book after the first one fell through, I started to see the community turning toxic.

Erica Anderson and tell me he's transphobic,'" Savage tweeted on Monday, "but I know people will continue to insist he's transphobic. But he isn't. But Savage isn't trans, and neither is Singal, and neither man is a cis expert on trans issues or on what is or isn't transphobic. So far, it sounds like Singal is a perfect candidate for the list. While he is cisgender, Singal is considered one of the leading voices in journalism on trans issues, especially by fellow cis people. When the person writing about an issue that scares you looks like you, you're more likely to listen to him. However, instead of using his platform on trans issues to talk about the 44 trans people who were murdered last year, or the over 80 anti-trans bills in state legislatures , or the high rates of poverty, suicidal ideation, and violent crime victimization that trans people face, he focuses all his trans writing on people who aren't trans. Singal couches his infamous Atlantic article in language that makes you think the story is about trans people, when in fact it's about gender nonconforming people and others who had thought they were trans.

Substack is the home for great writing. Support us! That's because what happens on Twitter, stays on Twitter. The library should, to put it bluntly, have a book somewhere on the shelves that will offend every single patron that comes in, as well as books they will love. I got caught up in all of it, particularly the wraps, which were hugely expensive pieces of fabric. It was so ridiculous. Gamp and Grimes Mar 14, Good luck taking a break from the coke-loving stripper girlfriend with borderline personality disorder that is Twitter! But here's the catch: these exact same people who privately despise them then go on social media and kiss their asses. More diversity in the publishing industry? I saw your article on YA and the twitter mob. It's not safe for teenagers which is really sad because the genre is meant for teenagers. Reload to refresh your session.

I use the Ownvoices hashtag and want diversity in the works I read. But this presents a similar problem: Will a book be less successful without those months of buzz and anticipation? I believe its proponents—of which I am one—are right to defend such an objective. Save it as PDF for later use! We were roasted.
