The group possessed many fearsome fighters, with some even obtaining the secrets to immortality. However, out of the four members that had gained permanence, Kakuzu was the only one that was organically immortal. The secret to his eternal life lies in the forceful extraction of his enemies' organs, and while it may sound quite simple, the process certainly isn't. Kakuzu was the oldest member of the Akatsuki, dating back to the times of the First Hokage. Since then, he had prolonged his life through the hearts of his defeated opponents, and while his eternal life still had several limitations, he could increase his lifespan as long as he had the bodies of his victims.

Kakuzu

When under the servitude of Takigakure as an elite ninja, Kakuzu took on a mission to assassinate Hashirama Senju , the First Hokage. This mission, however, ended in failure against the God of Shinobi. Despite the insurmountable danger faced on the mission, what awaited his return to his village was the stigma and harsh punishment associated with the failure of his objective. In response to this treatment, a wrong levied against a shinobi who had put life and limb on the line for his village, Kakuzu came to hold a violent hatred for Takigakure as he escaped from imprisonment. In his flight from the village, Kakuzu killed the village elders, took their hearts, and fled with knowledge of the village's most prized forbidden techniques. Some time after his defection, he became affiliated with, and joined, the criminal organisation, Akatsuki. During his early years in Akatsuki, he had at least four partners that he eventually ended up killing due to his short temper, and would come to use their hearts for his Earth Grudge Fear. He managed to destroy one of Kakuzu's heart. Taking an interest in his abilities, Akatsuki recruited Hidan instead. He was deemed a fitting partner for Kakuzu as he could not be killed because of his own, similar immortality.

However, Kakuzu survives the attack. Kicking Kakashi away, he takes off his Akatsuki robe to reveal his true body, held together by strings and four masks on his back, one of them punctured by Kakashi's Lightning Cutter. Kakuzu unleashes all four masks, but the damaged one succumbs and dies, alerting Kakashi to their weak spot.

Kakuzu

Kakuzu was a mercenary in the Akatsuki and among the organization's deadliest members. Able to command all releases and with five hearts in his chest, he was known as the "immortal ninja. Though Kakuzu has demonstrated proficiency in defeating dozens of enemy shinobi at once, he is not invincible. Through matching him against the series' many diverse characters, we can better appreciate the extent of his strength and the limitations that come with it.

Kakuzu also seems to care to an extent about Hidan, as he picked up and gave back his partner's forehead protector after he lost it during his fight with Asuma, a feat that made Hidan admit that Kakuzu is not as hostile as he appeared to be, although Kakuzu did note that he only did so because he could not stand the sight of the scar on Hidan's neck.
