They reduce the wear on your engine during cold weather starts! They plug into a standard electrical outlet and can be put onto a timer, or a temperature triggered electrical outlet. This in effect causes your engine to reach operating temperature much faster and gives you heat inside the cabin much faster as well. On top of the benefit of heating up quicker, it also saves your engine a ton of wear and tear on internal moving parts!
