It's no suprise perhaps, but the Zephyr functions pretty much as a quick glance at a picture of it might suggest it does. Its curious blend of s dogma and s technology results in a competent motorcycle, which has many squealing with delight. Not me, though. I sort of like it, but hard as I try I seem unable to generate much enthusiasm. It's all a bit bland and safe and I frequently find myself reaching for my KLR instead. Perhaps I'm not as old as I thought I was. I agree that Kawasaki's philosophy of 'getting back to basics' with the Zephyr is a jolly good idea, but it's not a new one.

Group Test Motosprint The CBR is the only one of the four to have been seriously modified since last year, and it has been revised in just about every direction. The full details appeared in our February issue, but the essence is: more power, more revs, and a complete set of geometry changes. Considering that we thought the '90 model was the all-round best of the s, there seemed to be a big risk that any changes could only make it worse. Not so. It is different not particularly better to ride and to handle, but it is a lot faster. One consequence of this is that things like the suspension and brakes are actually better than last year's, but this isn't obvious at first because the Honda arrives at places a lot more rapidly and needs the extra quality just to keep the same level of control. It has more top-end about 5 horsepower's worth and revs two to two-and-a-half thousand further into the wide blue yonder. This revability covers up some dips and bumps in the midrange because it lets Honda run lower gearing which translates into more tractive effort at the back wheel, and that's what the rider feels. We couldn't run quarter-mile times because some clod broke the wire, but the computer predicts an The computer also predicted a top speed of mph and the best we measured was

People fell in love with the customized Vulcan, some even offering to buy it on the spot. That bike, Hoover and Kawasaki hope, is the new Vulcan Classic, an artful blend of nostalgic styling and mechanical revisions. A variant of the year-old, less-than-beautiful Vulcan originally called the Vulcan 88, and still for sale in , the Classic is much more than a simple re-style, although a winning profile was absolutely vital. Make it simple. Give us early-American styling, with a low seat height. Seat height was a major consideration, says chassis engineer Hideo Honda.

A far, far cheaper way of cruising than buying into the Harley dream. Reliable too. The VNs are positively vast so, if road presence is important to you, they could be your thing. Lots of gutsy, low down performance with smooth touring speeds at the top end mean relaxed, joyful and easy riding. Soft, plush… Like sitting in a pile of cushions. A rubber-mounted, v-twin, oozing with thunderous torque, it hauls this heavyweight around with a seeming lack of effort. At higher speeds it copes well, cruising happily at around 80mph.

Schillaci 68'. All CBRs have suffered awkward-to-fit plastic; this one takes the art a stage further and if the studio where we stripped the bikes hadn't been on the ground floor, I would cheerfully have thrown the entire bike out of the window. Strong, reliable and with pretty funky handling for a cruiser, the Kawasaki VN makes for a useful bike as well as a perfect pose-machine. Not bad value but a bugger to keep clean. Ground clearance is minimal though.
