The Islanders are hoping to start play in time for the season, but must clear a number of hurdles, including securing the necessary ice time. Earlier this year, the City of Kenora announced the Islanders would not be provided ice times , after concerns were raised by community groups, arena users and city officials. The city was also seeking more time to determine the impact the addition of a Junior A team would have on the programming at either the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre of the Bowman Electric Keewatin Memorial Arena. A team representative appeared before Kenora city council this week , asking for support. Dawson said he chose the Islanders nickname as a tribute to the Kenora area. It drives the recreation and economic engines of our part of the province and was an obvious choice as the identity of our team. The team also considered the Thistles, a name with historic connections in the community, including the Stanley Cup-winning team of the same name.

The Wisconsin Lumberjacks were able to pull away late thanks to 2 unanswered goals in the 3rd period to secure a sweep of the Kenora Islanders. The 1st period was a back-and-forth stalemate to start all the way through the minute mark. Postal was ejected from both games in this series. Just over a minute later Dillon Phillips would open the scoring with his 8th of the season. Before the break Kenora would take the lead on a puck deflected off a Lumberjacks player 2 minutes later. The credit for the goals was given to Chell, his 2nd of the period.

Genaille, who is living in the Manitoba city of Thompson, was named the head coach of the Kenora Islanders on June Genaille, who is married and has five children ranging in age from nine to 15, said his entire family will not initially be able to move with him to Kenora.
