Deputies say after the initial collision, all vehicles except for the Focus were on the right side of I, with the Focus remaining in the left emergency lane of I, facing the wrong direction. Officials say within 10 minutes of the initial crash, the driver of the Focus, Phillip Latham, 70, exited his vehicle and attempted to run across I in the direction of the other vehicles. As this happened, Latham was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado in the right-hand lane. Officials say a Cadillac XT6 was traveling in the center lane and began to slow, due to traffic in front of the vehicle slowing to a stop. Authorities say the Cadillac was rear ended by a Ford Ranger. The collision, officials say, caused the Cadillac to enter the left-hand lane and sideswipe a Hyundai Elantra, while the Ranger entered the right-hand lane and sideswiped a Toyota Highlander.
