It details the life of the twins from their births, childhood, criminal careers, and eventual arrest. The book was adapted into the film Legend. He then flew to London and was taken to an Elizabethan mansion where he met the Twins over dinner. Pearson recalls asking Reggie about the bandage around his thumb to which Reggie said it was because of a gardening accident; the real cause was Reggie's murder of Jack McVitie a few weeks earlier. Pearson then says he had multiple sessions with the Twins the following months, asking them about their lives. The Twins had bought him a flat in Bethnal Green where they grew up. The last time he saw the Twins prior to their arrest was at their mother's flat in April He describes the meeting as uncomfortable as by that point the Twins had grown suspicious of others and Pearson who the Twins thought was working for the MI5. The Twins were sitting in their armchairs, playing with their boa constrictor they named " Nipper Read. He then notes that only after their arrests did people start talking candidly about them. This was when he learned of the Twins's connection to Lord Boothby. It was not until Boothby's death in that Pearson could safely publish what he knew. So when the film came out I just became more attracted to their story. They just needed to find a way to squeeze a few pounds out of everyone and they would have more than enough to live well. What I also thoroughly enjoy is how carefully he decides on his subjects, preferring quality over quantity in his list of titles. The author truly gets inside the mind of Reggie and Ronnie. A couple of good facts from this book: a young Fern Britton sent a signed publicity shot to Ronnie while he was in prison, and the twins employed "Southern Television's newscaster" Fred Dineage to ghost-write their memoirs. These were the trials that put them away for the rest of their lives and yet they never gave away the secret of the big lie perpetrated by the establishment over the Lord Boothby affair. Millions lose themselves in the rage or the fantasy without acting on it in the world. The only caveat I would have with the book is that the psychological profiling of the Twins, while plausible in many ways, is over-played.

In the story there are multiple occasions where Charlie makes plans with Reggie, but once Ronnie got involved, Reggie had changed his mind to accommodate Ronnie. He sent letters and talked on the phone with Reggie everyday. The Krays were famous during the "swinging sixties" and Ronnie took copious notes and the occasional photograph which "might come in handy later".
