La yukallifullahu nafsan

Sahih International Allah does la yukallifullahu nafsan charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned.

Ulama berbeda pendapat mengenai perhitungannya. Menurut Ali As-Shabuni, tanpa khilaf ulama surat ini seluruhnya Madaniyah. Ia termasuk ayat yang awal mula turun. Ia berisi ayat. As-Shabuni,

La yukallifullahu nafsan

La yukallifullahu nafsan illa wus'aha merupakan penggalan dari ayat terakhir surah Al Baqarah. Lafaz tersebut memiliki makna mendalam. Artinya: "Allah tidak membebani seseorang, kecuali menurut kesanggupannya. Baginya ada sesuatu pahala dari kebajikan yang diusahakannya dan terhadapnya ada pula sesuatu siksa atas kejahatan yang diperbuatnya. Mereka berdoa, "Wahai Tuhan kami, janganlah Engkau hukum kami jika kami lupa atau kami salah. Wahai Tuhan kami, janganlah Engkau bebani kami dengan beban yang berat sebagaimana Engkau bebankan kepada orang-orang sebelum kami. Wahai Tuhan kami, janganlah Engkau pikulkan kepada kami apa yang tidak sanggup kami memikulnya. Maafkanlah kami, ampunilah kami, dan rahmatilah kami. Engkaulah pelindung kami. Maka, tolonglah kami dalam menghadapi kaum kafir. Menurut terjemahan Al-Qur'an Kementerian Agama RI, arti la yukallifullahu nafsan illa wus'aha adalah Allah tidak membebani seseorang, kecuali menurut kesanggupannya. Dengan kata lain, seperti diterangkan dalam Tafsir Ibnu Katsir , seseorang tidak dibebani melainkan sebatas kemampuannya. Ibnu Katsir mengatakan, hal itu merupakan salah satu sifat lemah-lembut Allah SWT kepada makhluk-Nya dan kasih sayang-Nya serta kebaikan-Nya pada mereka. Lebih lanjut Ibnu Katsir menjelaskan bahwa ayat tersebut me-nasakh dan merevisi kekhawatiran pada sahabat dalam firman Allah SWT,.

Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that good which he has earned, and he is punished for that evil which he has earned. Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us Jews and Christians ; our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear.

And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us.

Believers pray to God not to place upon them a burden beyond their capacity of endurance, and to subject them only to those tests from which they may emerge triumphant.

Allah, the Almighty, is the Supreme Being in Islam, the one and only God who is worshipped by Muslims around the world. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and everything that exists within them. Muslims believe that Allah is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-merciful.

The prayer made here is that God should not subject them to the severe tests and the terrible persecutions and hardships undergone by their predecessors. Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! In these circumstances the Muslims were told in what manner they ought to pray to their Lord. Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Compare the wretchedness and misery of these devotees of Truth with the pure, exalted feelings with which this prayer is overflowing.
