Earth and Fire [1] were a Dutch rock and pop band. Formed in the Netherlands by twin brothers Chris and Gerard Koerts, and most popular in , after adding a female singer, turning frontwoman, Jerney Kaagman. Earth and Fire's first eight singles were a practically uninterrupted string of top-5 hits in the Netherlands Also charting in continental Europe, primarily in neighboring Belgium and Germany, the band never gained much popularity in the United Kingdom or the United States. After moving to pop, their biggest hit was " Weekend " , a number one disco track in the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Portugal, and Switzerland. In , influenced by beat music , they joined a local beat band, playing mostly instrumental music until early ; the Koerts brothers were remembered as musical perfectionists even at an early age. They changed their name to The Swinging Strings in and began singing and covering hits by the Beatles, the Byrds, and others.

De band was vooral in de jaren zeventig populair. White drums en Flemons zang, toetsen verhuisden met Sherry Scott zang en Yackov Ben Israel percussie naar Los Angeles ; Verdine White , de jongere broer van Maurice, verliet Chicago op 6 juni om zich bij de band aan te sluiten als bassist. Daarbij is Lucht air vervangen door het beter klinkende 'Wind'. Tussendoor nam EWF ook de soundtrack op voor de Melvin Van Peebles -film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song uitgebracht op Stax en bouwde de band een live-reputatie op in het universiteitscircuit; artistieke meningsverschillen maakten daar echter snel een einde aan. Clive Davis van Columbia Records was wel onder de indruk toen hij de band in New York zag optreden als voorprogramma van John Sebastian , en hij nam het Warner-contract over. Voorjaar verscheen Head to the Sky , het laatste album dat door Joe Wissert is geproduceerd. Naar aanleiding van het succes van Evil , maar ook omdat sommige nummers een lage stem nodig hadden werd Maurice White tenor leadzanger naast Philip Bailey falsetto. Op single verschenen Mighty Mighty goed voor een 29e plaats in de poplijsten en het spiritueel getinte Devotion. EWF speelde in dat jaar in een speelfilm de rol van een band die wordt ontdekt door Coleman Buckmaster gespeeld door Harvey Keitel en die tijdens hun eerste plaatopname met de keerzijde van de muziekindustrie wordt geconfronteerd: That's the Way of the World , geproduceerd door Sig Shore.
