More than residents are now displaced due to a massive fire that tore through two condo complexes in downtown Maple Ridge. The fire, which started around midnight Friday, and continued into the early hours of Saturday, June 10, engulfed the new development in the block of Brown Avenue and the residential building behind it located at st Ave.

A destructive fire that started in the Edge 3 apartment building under construction, and then spread to an adjacent Edge 2 building and two neighbouring houses, was the biggest story in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows in The Edge 3 building, under construction by MacLean Homes, was a five storey wood structure, that had no fire breaks, exterior cladding or sprinkler system to slow the spread. The building in the Block of Brown Avenue was described by a fire expert as a huge load of fuel, with no fire protection. Residents who saw the blaze just before midnight described intense heat that threw debris high the sky. Neighbours described the intense heat, some with singed hair and even burns as they evacuated. The blaze crossed a laneway to the inhabited Edge 2 apartment building, just to the north, where some people were burned out of their homes. Firefighters spend more than 12 hours fighting the massive blaze, which was completely extinguished on June 10 at 3 p. Fire Chief Michael Van Dop, who is currently on leave from the department, noted there were security cameras in the building under construction. He said the fire was advanced before firefighters arrived. We will be conducting an investigation, but it will likely culminate with mostly video evidence and interviews.
