One of the larger choices in the Mass Effect trilogy mass effect kaidan or ashley near the end of Mass Effect 1 on the planet Virmire. Players have to choose between leaving either Kaidan or Ashley behind, killing them off for the rest of the trilogy. The Virmire survivor goes on to return as a crewmate and romance option in Mass Effect 3meaning that a playthrough of the trilogy can vastly diverge depending on who is saved.
The first Mass Effect set a precedent for the remainder of the original trilogy. Commander Shepard knew by the time they reached Virmire that the decisions they were often forced to make would highly impact the future of the galaxy. When faced with the task of choosing which squadmate was worth saving, there wasn't much time for Shepard to carefully consider the overall impact of that choice. Knowing their lives were on the line, both Kaidan Alenko and Ashley Williams encouraged Shepard to save the other squadmate. As soldiers, they knew what they were signing up for when they joined the Alliance, and sacrificing themselves for the good of the team was all but a requirement. A lot of players have been prompted to choose whichever squadmate they were trying to launch a romance with, knowing if their potential love interest died that's it for the relationship.

The squadmate who survives Mass Effect 1 goes on to make an appearance in Mass Effect 2 , and then return in a more prominent role in the third game. There's plenty of debate among fans as to which of Shepard's human squadmates is worth saving. Some compare Kaiden's utility as a Sentinel to Ashley's as a Solider, with different implications depending on the class the player picked for Shepard. For many Mass Effect: Legendary Edition players, however, the most important part of any decision in the series is how it affects the story. Although the Virmire survivor fulfills a similar role in the narrative regardless of whether Shepard saved Ashley or Kaiden, their unique characterizations have a big impact on the tone rest of the trilogy. For fans struggling to make up their minds, here's how Mass Effect 1 's Virmire survivor shapes the rest of the games. Before Virmire there are a few different ways Ashley and Kaiden's stories can go. Shepard's gender will affect which one of them wandered towards the Beacon on Eden Prime, for example. If Shepard is male, he will throw himself in front of Ashley, receiving the visions of the Reapers in her place. In Fem Shep's case, it's Kaiden who walks towards the Beacon. If so, Kaiden takes the events of Eden Prime - including Jenkins' death - harder, blaming himself for burdening Shepard with her visions. Shepard can also affect the personalities of Ashley or Kaiden depending on dialogue options. Choosing Paragon options in conversation with Ashley, for example, can steer her away from her initial prejudice towards the Normandy's alien crewmembers, and will help her begin to get over her grandfather's legacy as the first human to surrender to the Turians during the First Contact War. In contrast, picking Renegade dialogue when talking to Kaiden will make him more pro-human, despite his initial instinct that humanity still needs to earn its place on the Citadel Council.

Otherwise, you can shoot him yourself, order Ashley to shoot him if you told her to "Stay Alert" earlier, or can't find a resolution that will result in Ashley killing him herself. Towards the end of Virmire , you'll be forced to choose to rescue either Kaidan or Ashley, who will be at the bomb site or the AA tower who is where depends on who you assigned to Kirrahe's team before the assault.

BioWare games seem to indicate that the studio enjoys putting players in the position to make tough choices. With the release of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition , players can once again relive the hardest choices BioWare can throw at them. One of the most memorable early decisions with long-lasting effects in Mass Effect is deciding who lives and who dies between Kaidan and Ashley. After arriving on Virmire and fighting through waves of Geth, Shepard and their crew will meet up with the Salarians. The leader of the Salarian group, Captain Kirrahe, requests help from Shepard's team, and both Kaidan and Ashley volunteer. While the decision of who goes with which team might seem like the life and death choice, it isn't. Both characters will survive until the end of the mission; however, in the final moments, both teams get overrun and Shepard has to make the very black and white choice of either saving Ashley or Kaidan. The game is very clear that saving both isn't an option.

Ashley is a soldier which means she specializes in assault weapons and has soldier powers. If Kaiden survives and is eventually killed by Shepard during the Cerberus attack on the Citadel , his story comes to an end in a grim reversal of his backstory, where he killed an abusive mentor during his training. When considering who to save, players may want to take this into consideration, especially if they've equipped powerful armor to a certain character. The romance subplot of the game may not seem to have lasting consequences, but if the player romance Kaidan or Ashley, this might be a factor when making the final decision on who to save.
