Based on the idea of natural exploration, classic tools have been brought back by adding features such as a compass in the dashboard. Mercedes-Benz has revealed the outlandish Project Maybach concept — an all-electric and totally bespoke creation, co-designed with fashion designer Virgil Abloh, who passed away earlier this month. The concept has been revealed in tribute to Abloh, who worked with Mercedes designer Gordon Wagener to create a show car that "exemplifies the possibilities of future design". The concept has been designed from the ground up and is said to be "unlike anything" the manufacturer has created so far.

For over a century, Mercedes—Maybach has defined the boundaries of luxury experiences, and the limited-edition Maybach byVirgil Abloh , a specially curated Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S , continues this tradition. While the upper part of the vehicle is finished in a glossy Obsidian Black, the lower portion, side flanks and special forged rims are painted in a sand hue. The highest levels of craftsmanship continue into the vehicle's interior with an identical two-tone color scheme. The four-seat configuration, steering wheel, doors, lower dashboard and headliner are finished in black and sand colored Nappa Leather, complete with sand colored trims and strips. The high-pile floor mats are black with a sand colored leather border and embroidered Mercedes-Maybach logo. To enhance its monolithic appearance, the window frames are painted, and a special Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logo is inscribed on the Piano Black middle of the center console, rear cushions, headrests and door sill panel. Unique to the limited-edition Maybach S-Class is a personalized user interface, which presents the driver with an even more luxurious variation of the Maybach MBUX suite of cutting-edge technologies. Handpicked visual elements are used to enrich the digital content: from a home button with colored border and brand logo denoting the limited-edition, to profile pictures decorated with luxurious fashion accessories. The result is an even more intuitive vehicle that exudes the limited-edition's distinctive style from exterior to interior.

The stunning show car was designed under the guidance of Abloh—who founded the design company Off-White and headed Louis Vuitton's menswear division—and Mercedes's chief design officer, Gorden Wagener. While the concept's long-hood proportions evoke the Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept from , Mercedes says that every piece of the Project Maybach, which stretches nearly 20 feet in length, was built from scratch. The electric coupe is decked out for off-roading, with thick, knobby all-terrain tires and an exterior roll cage sprouting up and over the cabin. There are also tough metal skid plates at the front and rear and body cladding with exposed rivets over the wheel wells. The Project Maybach's front end features striking circular headlights and chrome vertical grille trim pieces under a glowing full-width light bar. Four auxiliary lights adorn a bull bar attached to the bumper, and four more lights extend from the roof rack. Round taillights mimic the headlights, and the two-tone appearance hides solar cells, for boosting the Maybach's range, under the hood.
