While this may be the 13th year for the sawmill, they find new ways to keep things fresh every year. The main character is Vincent and everything builds off him. Each sawmill worker comes up with a subtheme and figures out how to work in the new elements with that subtheme. Hersil encourages actors to build out their characters. The popular fall attraction, in its 11th annual season, returned for fall with a fictionalized storyline following protagonist Vincent Mudgett through an abandoned sawmill after the mill was closed and condemned by the city of Merrill. The Haunted Sawmill boasts high attendance rates, ranging from visitors on a slow evening to 1, people on a busy night. Attendees often wait in long lines and brave bitter temperatures for a fright. Home of the former Northern Specialty Co. Floors layered in fog, actors in full costume makeup jumping out of corners, walls painted in graffiti, a graveyard in the exterior lawn, and guests dodging through dark rooms are included in the Haunted Sawmill experience. The sawmill has since separated from the Boy Scouts organization and formed the private nonprofit Friends of Vincent Foundation in Many of the sawmill's staff include Merrill youth who gather after school on weekdays to help prep and plan for the sawmill's annual season.
