In the bleak and grimy wasteland of Metro Exodus , it's easy to forget how to be altruistic and retain that which makes you a human being. The developers wanted to encourage playing the game naturally instead of having gamers hone in on every choice. As the realization dawns on Artyom, so does the fact that he cannot do anything to stop the missiles, as they are a last thought going through his head. The 'Ranger' ending is considered the canonical ending, as it is very similar to the novel.
