With Castlevania: Nocturne recently green-lit for a second season, Netflix has once again shown its aptitude for turning video games into animated shows. It's only logical to wonder what other video games are ripe for this adaptation, and Nintendo's Metroid series should be at the top of fans' wish lists. First debuting in for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Metroid followed the adventures of Bounty Hunter Samus Aran as she explored the depths of planet Zebes, hunting for upgrades and fighting the Space Pirates. The series has seen many peaks since its debut, notably its first foray into 3D with Metroid Prime and the recent surprise success of 's Metroid Dread. The series' structure, atmosphere, and rich lore lends itself perfectly to animated adaptations in the mold of Netflix's Castlevania -- slick 2D animation in minute episodes. Both debuting in the mids on the limited power of the 8-bit NES hardware, Castlevania and Metroid , are two series that have a lot in common. Both series drew broadly from the genre tropes they're pulling from. Classic Universal and Hammer horror films inspired Castlevania , while the world of science fiction inspired Metroid. Mainly, Metroid pulled for the film Alien , even naming one of the series' main antagonists, Ridley , after that film's director, Ridley Scott. Both series were also ahead of their time in terms of storytelling. Cinematic cutscenes were still decades away, but they filled their levels with visual details in their early iterations, hinting at far richer worlds. The Castlevania series used these details to build a fuller world and richer characters. Metroid has always been a series filled with mysteries and lore sitting just in the background to the main adventure, and an animated series could bring all of that to the surface. Most Metroid games follow a simple structure: Samus answers a distress call, ends up on a hostile planet or space station, and has to find upgrades and fight bad guys to get her way out. A Metroid series could have Samus answering a new distress call every episode, meeting new civilizations, and solving different problems, but this would go against a core aspect of the series.

If Adi Shankar has his way, a dark and gritty Metroid animated series will be in his future. For years, Shankar has aimed to reinvent known properties in his hyper-violent and grim style. After making a name for himself as a film producer, Shankar caught the internet's attention with short films based upon The Punisher, Venom and even the Power Rangers. Since that time, plans have been announced for him to tackle a dark Power Rangers TV show , but that's hardly the only thing he's working on. Shankar's big focus right now is the Netflix animated series Castlevania. Based on the hit video game franchise, the short but enjoyable first season has already been renewed and given twice the episode count. Mixing the supernatural, anime, video game mythology, and lots of violent action, the show has been a hit with fans. But Shankar, never one to stick to a single project, wants to turn his producer's eye on a number of other video game adaptations. And though it's unclear how Nintendo would feel about a non-family-friendly approach to one of their properties, Shankar is keen to work with them. While speaking with Nintendo Life , Shankar was asked which other video game he'd like to adapt and his choice is sure to excite fans.
