Over the decades since the original Metroid and Castlevania games were released, their cleverly created Metroidvania subgenre has grown into a massive section of the video game market. Metroidvania games can encapsulate several themes and range from humorous to horror, but share the same core features. While they are typically side-scrolling platform games, this isn't always the case, and the genre itself seems to continue to grow and evolve over the years as new games are released that push beyond the norm. Some things that are always apparent in a Metroidvania game are their large maps with secrets hidden throughout, and a lot of backtracking through the labyrinth of paths that can be taken. Many indie developers have created unique spins on Metroidvanias, and there are so many incredible titles that fit the description that, sadly, they cannot all be included on this list. To define what the best games are for this list, reviews and Metacritic scores have been considered to ensure that they are evaluated fairly.

Great list, though I think The Messenger is a great game and it's Metroidvania component is it's weakest element, and Shantae is just the pits, and outclassed by Monster Boy in every single regard. Played the demo of Astalon and I'm thinking I'll nab that in due time too. And it looks like the 2D series finally will be revived as it should be. Fairly short and not really open to much backtracking either. It's everything the first game should have been, and I think my fourth favorite metroidvania after Hollow Knight, Steamworld Dig 2, and Blasphemous. Because that's all I got but it does have ssd though - it's fairly new. It's sad to see Nintendo Life misusing this word, especially since they're English and should understand their own language better than anyone else. Maybe I like them more than I thought. Wouldn't have minded seeing it mentioned. She is given a new suit after her near-death experience and returns to an empty Galactic Federation station, where something seems out of place.
