Welcome back to Sunday Standings, where we take a snapshot of how the Metropolitan Division is going and talk about which teams are on the rise and fall. As the calendar starts working into December, there are a bunch of familiar faces in the top half of the standings now. The Capitals put their stamp on first place for this week with a win over Carolina. After starting the season and basically not losing, the Hurricanes have endured a tough stretch of late; going from November 22nd - December 2nd with losses to bad teams such as Chicago and Seattle. For Washington, that big Carolina win was followed up by blowing a lead over Florida turning it into a regulation loss and a lead over Chicago seeing that eventually become a shootout loss.

Perhaps the most competitive division in the league is the Metropolitan. There were quite a few changes in the Metro this offseason, which we reviewed earlier this summer. Drafting Adam Fantilli third overall should help quite a bit, as he should be in the Calder Trophy conversation alongside Connor Bedard. Elsewhere in the top-nine are Johnny Gaudreau and Patrik Laine, the latter of whom has moved to center. They should provide the most scoring punch for the Blue Jackets. The team is also hoping for another step forward from Kent Johnson, a top-five pick in the draft, and Kirill Marchenko, who totaled 21 goals in 59 games last season. Emil Bemstrom and Alexandre Texier are wild cards. Still, their defense has question marks. Erik Gudbranson is a liability, while Adam Boqvist has had trouble staying healthy.
