Steve Adams came late to the trail. Indeed, he had never hiked before he set out on the Appalachian Trail at the age of Several falls, blunders, and embarrassments later—six months later, in fact—he was screaming at the top of his voice, precariously perched on the famous brown sign, at Katahdin, Maine. His epic last two states are shown in the video at the bottom of this page. It took him , words to get part of the way through Virginia, then over , before he even reached Maine. Eventually, he topped out at more than a quarter of a million words, many of which needed to be ditched to achieve a modicum of brevity. Even then, splitting his book into two volumes made the project more manageable.
