He had an antagonistic relationship with his step-son, Klaus, as he was the son of a werewolf named Ansel. He then sought out Damon and Stefan Salvatore and formed a plan with them to kill Klaus. However, in Homecoming, Mikael was killed by Klaus due to Stefan's interference. He eventually convinced her to resurrect him by offering to help her kill Klaus.

This protective instinct empowered him to fight through his desiccation and land a hit on Dahlia.

Mikael is the father of the Original family and is also technically the first ever vampire. He's very authoritarian, especially toward Klaus , resulting in his children fearing him. As a wealthy landowner in Eastern Europe, he and his wife, Esther , start a family. However, their oldest son dies of an illness, so they move to the area that later becomes Mystic Falls and live amongst werewolves. Mikael and Esther come up with the plan to turn their children into vampires after their youngest son, Henrik, is killed by a werewolf.

The Originals are the most dangerous vampires on The Vampire Diaries but there are several times when they die throughout the young adult drama's eight seasons. The Originals are the very first vampires and they are quicker and mightier than other kinds, which sets them apart and makes them a serious threat. They can be killed using a White Oak Stake, which is magical and will stop the spell that creates original vampires. This is different from a White Ash Oak Dagger, which can't kill an Original Vampire but will stop their power for a while. They can also be killed by an Upgraded Original Vampire's venom. Several Original Vampires are killed during the series, and each time, the other characters are affected. In contrast to TVD deaths that are permanent , when an Original Vampire is murdered, there is often the chance that they will come back, and Finn appears again in season 3 of The Originals when Upgraded Original Vampire Lucien Castle Andrew Lees gives him venom, which is another way to kill these creatures. The lead-up to Finn's death is tense and dramatic, with Rebekah going after Damon Salvatore Ian Somerhalder for reading her mind about the stake.
