Having pretty much cornered the market for great dance compilations with Clubber Guides, Trance Nations, Annuals and the like, Ministry Of Sound took a step away from the dancefloor with its first major chillout compilation The Chillout Session. And as with their more uptempo assortments, the quality of the tracks is superlative. From the subtle downtempo beats and pieces of Jakatta's "American Dream" to the Ibizan sunset vibes of York's "The Awakening" to horizontal classics like Lemon Jelly's "In The Bath" and Leftfield's "Melt", you can almost picture the lava lamp steadily bubbling away in the corner of the room. It's not all instrumental tracks, either, Alex Gopher's "The Child" and Fatboy Slim and Macy Gray's collaboration on "Demons" both pop up to add a little bit of late-night soul. Songs on Chillout Sessions compilations vary in style from lounge to electronica and are released by many different artists. Some Chillout Sessions albums have become known and distinguishable for the symbol of a turntable with the Ministry of Sound logo on it frozen in ice, or in one case The Summer Collection the turntable itself is made of ice. In Australia, the image is used for volumes 1—6 except on volume 3. The idea of the turntable with the Ministry of Sound logo on had been used on the covers of the Ministry of Sound Clubbers Guide in prior years and in The Annual IV , the idea of such turntable on the covers was last used on Clubbers Guide albums in early when The Chillout Session began using the idea. Ministry of Sound, as a label, began in and its first album was the first volume of a series called Sessions. The series was successful enough for it to generate a spin-off series of The Chillout Session , which began in with a UK Compilation Chart 1 album. Volume 2 was also very successful. The first and second volumes were released in both the UK and Australia, but the series divided in August , with one series for the UK and the other for Australia. Sessions is a series of DJ mix albums, each album normally by a different DJ who also compiles the tracks, released by the London -based electronic dance music label Ministry of Sound. Alongside The Annual , it is one of Ministry of Sound's better-known compilation album series. The Ministry of Sound record label began in , and the first release on it was The Sessions Volume One , a track mix compiled and mixed by Tony Humphries. It was critically acclaimed and more Sessions were released to critical acclaim and even charted higher in the UK Compilation Chart.
