The examples were in two categories that I felt a newcomer would enjoy using; 35mm point and shoot cameras and 35mm SLR cameras.
Minolta Co. It made the first integrated autofocus 35 mm SLR camera system. In , the company adopted its final name, an acronym for " M echanism, In struments, O ptics, and L enses by Ta shima". In , Minolta merged with Konica to form Konica Minolta. My personal SRT had clearly seen a lot of these — the film door had to be coaxed into closing, the viewfinder had a crack in it, and the meter needle drooped in depression. It was smaller and lighter than the SRT, had a much improved meter and a variety of metering modes. Best of all, this one-time flagship camera was now available for a song, and could often be found for about a hundred dollars. I found myself in such a situation after winning a batch of cameras for less than thirty dollars. I bought the lot just to get at the gem hidden within, a Minolta XD. When the camera arrived, I sent it off for a full tune up without delay. I had an upcoming trip to Europe and was planning to take the XD as my main shooter. It arrived freshly rebuilt with just enough time to shoot a test roll and see what the meter would do. Those first photos of Virginia cherry blossoms in the spring hinted at good things to come. It has somehow become that guy from high school who everyone fondly remembers, even if no one seems to remember his name. In Minolta had found success with its XE. Around the same time, Olympus, Canon, and Pentax began releasing much smaller yet no less capable cameras in the OM series , A series , and ME series respectively. Almost overnight, the rather muscular XE became too damn big. The XD is a camera that combines all the bells and whistles available in the late seventies. It boasted a highly improved silicon photocell and through-the-lens centre-weighted light meter with an automatic exposure range of EV 1 to 18 at ISO

The model, with the 'M' designation for its capability of being used with the 3. The XG-M is essentially an update of the XG-9 , now outfitted with a stylized new body which is to become the next generation of Minolta's standard manual-focus SLR body, including the X, and X External design changes include a different prism cover, a right-hand grip on the front of the body, a new corporate logo, a film memo holder, and a removable back. A new main on-off was placed beneath the shutter speed dial. The XG bodies are just as capable with their many features which will meet all the needs of an average photographer. Even the lowest XG-A is capable of capturing stunning photographs while staying a true companion to your photographic adventures. The ease of use of the XG Series is an excellent choice not only for the beginner but for the advanced enthusiast as well. The XG-M supported aperture-priority autoexposure, with the shutter speed dial set to the A auto position and full manual mode. For aperture-priority shooting, the shutter speed selected is displayed on the vertical speed scale bar in the viewfinder, and in manual mode, the bar will display the recommended shutter speed.

Dad was an instrument maker and specialized in optics. One of the cameras I came across was a Minolta X The more I examined it the more impressed I was. Previous to the release of the X there were two distinct lines — the metal vertical shutter XD series which introduced multimode automatic exposure to the world and the more consumer oriented XG series with horizontal cloth focal plane shutters. The XG series grew to become more and more capable, featuring full information viewfinders and most of the features you could ever expect on a top-end body. The X grew out of that XG line. It had sophisticated metering and motor drives. As well as aperture priority automatic exposure, it also allowed for a programme mode where the camera would pick an appropriate combination of shutter speed and aperture for any given lighting condition. The X was a big hit in European Camera of the year several years running.

I admire risk-takers in any industry because I feel that visionaries are the ones who urge everyone forward to a better future. The camera industry is no different. His recommendation came from the assertion that the brand engaged in an uncommon pursuit of engineering excellence.
As it transpired, Kentmere was not the right choice of film to use that day, as the bright sunshine and defined shadows soon gave way to overcast skies and flat light. But I pressed on, as I wanted to see how the camera performed and felt it would be a good test. Really well done review on one of my favorite cameras.
