A pologies in advance for being anti-climactic, but the Toyota Supra is a damn good sports car. Stiff competition.

Of course, some will say that had Toyota developed the Supra by itself, it would have been better. So that brings me to today. All of these thoughts were running through my mind as I picked up the keys to the most enthusiast-oriented version of the new-age Supra, the six-speed manual model. What I found before me was a front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car with a powerful engine and a stick shift. That sounds like the perfect recipe for success. However, it took more than the first drive for me to fully appreciate just how good this thing is.

Sensible, conservative Toyota has taken leave of its senses. Mainstream cars are good to drive again, and its second new-gen sports car, the Supra, is a fitting halo for the brand. Modern demands make the age-old recipe harder than it used to be. That is: A bit of motor up front and power to the rear wheels, with a row-your-own shifter in between. Buyers want at least some comfort, convenience or tech features… Keeping up with the Joneses, I suppose.

While most of Toyota's lineup consists of consumer-grade sedans and SUVs, models marked with the initials GR represent the automaker's highest levels of performance, and chief among that subset is the GR Supra. While it's based on—and built alongside—the BMW Z4 convertible , the Supra brings an entirely different curb appeal that helped land it on our Editors' Choice list. The two share most everything else though, including hp turbocharged four-cylinder and hp turbocharged 3. All Supra models are rear-wheel drive and you can have either an eight-speed automatic or, as we prefer, a six-speed manual. The interior borrows heavily from the BMW parts bin—either a good or bad thing depending on who you ask.
