The champions of each competitive region as well as the runner-ups of the major regions compete for the MSI title.

The MSI Classic League is a unique program that bridges the gap between playing for the love of the game at the recreation level and the elite competition and commitment of a travel program. Our Classic League is a competitive environment all played on fields within Montgomery County. Each Classic team is autonomous and manages its own player selection and team budget, so player costs to participate and time commitment levels will vary depending on whether the team is led by a paid coach or is volunteer-led. Please make sure headshots are passport-style, facing forward with just head and shoulders showing; no other people; no hats; no sunglasses; and are uploaded the correct way up. It is the second most important international League of Legends tournament aside from the World Championship. Since , Spring Split champions from all regions have been participating in the event. The top four regions gets the pool 1 spot in the World Championship's Group Stage. All games of the tournament were hosted in the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. In line with last years iteration, 5 teams qualified to participate at the Mid-Season Invitational after winning the Spring Split within their own regional leagues, while a team from the Wildcard regions qualified by winning the Mid-Season International Wildcard Invitational IWCI.

The Mid-Season Invitational is finally here. Throughout the month, 11 of the top teams from around the world will compete against each other in the first international League of Legends event of the year. Every other team will compete in Busan, South Korea in front of a live audience. Instead, they will be competing remotely from home in accordance with local health and safety protocols. Each of the three stages will be played on different days. Teams will have several days of rest between each stage. MSI will be the first edition of the event since to have a live audience. Fans will naturally be able to follow the competition online.

On the 21st of April, it was also announced that the LPL representative would be competing online from China due to the COVID pandemic, with all teams competing at 35ms instead to level the playing field.
