Pioneer is a constructed format that allows expansion sets and core sets from Return to Ravnica forward, save for the Pioneer ban list. The format was introduced on October 21, , and was officially codified on January 30, , when it was featured on Grand Prix Brussels. The pandemic meant that paper tournaments were out of the question, and with it most of its purpose for being. Those playing online would either lean towards Modern or Legacy, with their existing player base and occasional supplemental products, while MTG Arena was not prepared to absorb twenty sets of cards at short notice. Official tournament support used Historic as a secondary Constructed format, due to it being available immediately, and so more resources were allocated to managing it. This led to the perception of Pioneer being a dead format.
If you play Magic: The Gathering, there is a good chance you are aware of Pioneer. This article is for you! In late , Wizards of the Coast announced the creation of a new format called Pioneer. Pioneer took inspiration from the player-created format Frontier, which was designed as a cheap and convenient format for players who wanted to use their rotated Standard cards. Frontier encompassed sets between Magic and onward, using the M15 frame as a reference for legality. In this way, it was similar to Modern, which uses an earlier change of card frames as its cutoff point. For new players, Standard is the easiest way to jump into the game due to its narrow card pool: only cards printed in the last two years are legal. As a result, it offers a smooth path into the game since it allows you to focus on fundamentals.
