Initially, Cable's origin was undecided and he was assumed to be a separate character. Nathan was informed by Blaquesmith that his older self's inability to protect the timeline and not returning the time-displaced original X-Men to their proper time was causing this, as the result would be the eventual death of Iceman and thus the changing of the timeline. Without the need to sleep, Nathan Summers has all the more time to plan his own personal war against the enemies of mutantkind. Whether his father Cyclops can follow in his footsteps and stop sleeping remains to be seen, but either way, Scott Summers is undoubtedly honored by his son Cable.

Cable returned to the present to take command of the New Mutants and guide Guthrie's ascension into the Externals.
