The sideline in football is the boundary line that separates the field of play from the out of bounds area. Players, coaches, medical personnel, and the media all stand on the sideline. The sideline is marked by a strip of white-painted turf, like the yard lines , that lines each edge of the field. A ball or ball carrier touching or going beyond the sideline is considered out of bounds, meaning that the play will be blown dead. According to the rulebook, the sideline is the boundary line of the long sides of the field; the boundary lines on the shorter sides of the field are called end lines. The sidelines are four inches wide.
