The name Mii is a portmanteau of "Wii" and "me", referring to them typically being avatars of the players. Nintendo miis
Their name is obviously a reference to the name of the Wii and the fact that the character can reflect the player and of course others as well. They have since become a phenomenon and arguably the mascot of the Wii console. Once the player has created a Mii, they are allowed to use the character in a game of their choice and turn them into a playable character. However, the DS itself does not have a Mii Maker app, meaning Miis saved to one game cannot be used in the other. On the Wii, the Miis live in a small pocket-dimension called Mii Plaza. Miis were previously available on smartphones with the Miitomo mobile game, but this was discontinued on May 9, Miis first appeared on the Wii console in the Mii channel, where Mii creators could choose what the Mii looks like and then save the Mii's look. The main characters of these games happen to be Miis, and they are used in nearly every mode of each game. They are also often seen in the background as virtual spectators. For example, in Wii Play' s ping pong game, Miis can be seen around the table cheering you on. The table tennis mode in Wii Sports Resort actually had the Miis playing the game.
Miis on the Nintendo 3DS can also be used in conjunction with the device's Augmented Reality software - the software includes a mini-app named nintendo miis Pics' which allows the user to take a photo of their Mii within a regular photo, using an augmented reality card included with the system, nintendo miis.

Ah, the Mii. We remember when we first made our own Miis back in Back then the most character customisation we had experienced was probably with The Sims , so making Miis of our friends, family and favourite video game characters was a fun pastime. It's a real shame, then, that Nintendo stepped away from their Miis, presumably in an attempt to distance Switch from the Wii branding. These fun avatars are still around, of course — the Switch has its own Mii Maker hidden away — but it's not as pronounced and they have certainly taken a back seat in recent years. With that said, the launch of Miitopia on Switch this Friday sees Miis return in full force with its own enhanced Mii Maker utility , so we thought it would be fun to take a look back at the history of the Miis — what led to their development, their popularity and their eventual side-lining. The idea of making your own custom characters for video games was one that Nintendo had been brewing in their offices since as early as the NES days. As outlined by the man himself in a GDC keynote that charted the evolution of the Mii, a prototype was even developed but when Miyamoto presented his idea to the other higher-ups at Nintendo, they truly struggled to see how this could be turned into a fun game, and so the idea was shelved. Miyamoto is known for his tenacity, however, and this idea wouldn't go unused.
